Listening

  •  Nickel Creek - Love of Mine I danced today. To this.
  •  David Gray - The One I Love *Sobbed* my way through this at the DG concert the other night, squeezing my Mum's hand tightly. I've braved some more listens today.
  • James Vincent McMorrow - We Don't Eat Just something I found when travelling round the internet. Beautiful. I can't get enough of it.
  • John Coltrane - Blue Train   A friend of mine who has a bit of influence in my life at the moment is a jazz musician. I've taken a bit of interest over the years, and am back to it again. I recently looked up John Coltrane and having been blasting the kids with this album. My friend says even he doesn't listen to it much but it is SO cool and that makes me even cooler than him (now we all know that's not true!).
  • Bob Dylan - Hurricane  In more raiding of Mum's music collection, we have been dancing our hearts out to Bob's "Hurricane,"and *loving* it. Why have I not discovered this before?! Perhaps it's a good thing my kids don't tune in to the words just yet, though we do hear "Rubin/Reuben" a few times. Turn the screen off and get your dance mat out, and when you want to follow the story, sit down for a sober read. Or perhaps round the other way (This link misses out the stunning instrumental that we enjoyed on "The Essential Bob Dylan" - the track is 8 - 9 minutes long - but I haven't been able to find it online).
  • Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water  We're staying at Mum's so have been raiding her record collection, and these guys were her absolute faves when I was a kid. I'm not sure I can choose a favourite, but Bridge Over Troubled Water is huge. Though Mum always turned it up extra loud for Cecilia, and you should see Esther dancing to it. It does something to me too.
  • Florence + the Machine - Not Fade Away Caught this on the radio this morning and have listened half a dozen times since.
  • Pentatonix - Little Drummer Boy  Merry Christmas everyone
  • Dido - White Flag I heard this in a cafe recently and it transported me back to another time in my life. The lyrics have stuck in my head and I have tried to work out if they mean anything to me. And I have realised. I will NOT go down with this ship. I'm choosing to stay afloat, whatever it takes.
  • Elbow - Dear Friends I have discovered Elbow! Very late one night listening to the radio had me scribbling down by torchlight the line "you are the stars I navigate home by"  along with "Elbow? - Friend?" I have since found heaps of their stuff and it's all well worth a listen, so have a look around on You Tube. Their sound somehow reminds me of our time in London.
  • Lorde - Royals  This one's especially for you Alex. Lorde is the latest thing (didn't you know) and I have felt very impressed that I'm so up with what's happening! I have listened again a few times this week as there was a brief doco on TV about her the other day. Loved the way she came across on TV - her approach and attitude. This song will really push the boundaries for you I think. I love it. Turn the video off.
  • Avicii - Wake Me Up  I came across this totally by accident on TV when looking for cartoons for the kids, and I now know it's number one everywhere and everybody knows it! The video is mesmerizing but distracting, turn off the screen and give the song its due for your first listen.
  • Laura Marling - Sophia  Wow, wow, wow. Mum told me about Laura Marling, and this is the first song I found. Love the progression, love all the strings. Love, love, love.
  • Brooke Fraser - Flags  "Reality has left you reeling"  has been running through my head all week.
  • Badly Drawn Boy - Time of Times Live and Times of Times original - After the last listening link my brother reminded me of this song, which I heard only recently for the first time. The live version is lovely, and the original needs to be heard.
  • Badly Drawn Boy - Silent Sigh  I came across these guys a while ago, and something reminded me of them recently. A lovely piece of music.
  • The Lumineers - Stubborn Love I listen to this over and over and over. "It's better to feel pain, than nothing at all." Oh boy, really? The singer lost a brother when they were in their early 20s, so I guess he knows what he's talking about.
  • The Naked and Famous -  Young Blood (Renholder Remix) Just something I came across on Tumblr. The picture of the ocean and coastline remind me of campervanning and scootering around Italy. The pictures of the sky make me think of heaven. I have a one track mind.
  • Live - Lightning Crashes  When did you last hear this? I found it while scrolling through my little emergency radio in my bedroom while the kids were dancing on my bed. It transported me to days long ago when life was good, and speaks of such pain and intensity and desperation. Listening to this is quite a journey, and Kent is right in it.
  • Mark Vanilau - Giant of the Sea  Heard on Radio New Zealand National
  • Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill and Solsbury Hill Live  I heard this the other day and it took me back a while - I love it! The original is best, but Reuben's enjoying watching the live version, and I don't blame him.

    1. Yes I nearly did a while ago, I'm not sure what stopped me. But I should be encouraged again. I don't know how to find new music without Kent to introduce it to me, though this list suggests I am managing somehow!

  2. Well, I'd never heard Avicii, or heard of them, so you're ahead of me. I quite like the song part, but could do with out the thumping club backdrop, particularly the instrumental bits (gosh, I am getting terribly old and dull!)
(I do love this page, though - thanks for including it.)
